you are able to gently affect your organs, glands, and each part of your body by stimulating reflex points on your feet   What occurs is a stimulation of the nerves in these areas.  There are 15,000 nerves in your feet alone and by the pressure/massage of points specific to a body area, you can improve the function and create a more soothing and calming state of mind. The time you invest with any form of relaxation, you will feel more nurtured, grounded and have more clarity about who you are.

To apply pressure, it is suggested that you use your thumb or index finger and simply press on a specific area for about five to ten seconds.  Image result for zone therapy

Wikipedia defines:  Reflexology is an alternative medicine involving application of pressure to the feet and hands with specific thumb, finger, and hand techniques without the use of oil or lotion. It is based on a system of zones and reflex areas that purportedly reflect an image of the body on the feet and hands, with the premise that such work effects a physical change to the body.

Reflexology points that can be stimulated for major glands

The hypothalamus – area of brain that controls appetite and thirst and is located outside the big toe.  The Pituitary stimulates and balances hormonal secretions of all other glands – located in the center of the big toe. Thyroid regulates metabolism and is located at the bottom of the big toe. The  solar plexus/diaphragm reduces stress – located under ball of foot.  The adrenal glands help to maintain your energy levels to burn off calories – located near inner edge of foot at sole center.

Reflexology has been practiced for over 4000 years, by Indian, Chinese and Egyptian cultures.  Evidence of this is shown in a physician’s tomb in Saqqara, Egypt…”  Dr. Shelby Riley and Dr. William Fitzgerald developed “Zone Therapy” in the early 1900. This is the application of pressure on certain points which would relieve pain in a corresponding area. Eunice Ingham, who worked closely with Dr. Riley, started developing her foot trigger point theory in the early 1930’s.

Reflexologists claim that the blockage of an energy field, or Qi, can interfere with any healing that the body may need..Also is the ability to relieve stress and pain in other parts of the body through the massage and pressure pointing of the feet. The pressure received in the feet may send signals that ‘balance’ the nervous system or release chemicals such as endorphins that reduce stress and pain.   Not all of the medical community supports this type of zone therapy.  However, because this is considered an alternative form of medicine, it is a personal decision to be curious about reflexology.  Not unlike any type of massage, it is both stimulating and relaxing.  So the next time you are just sitting and watching TV, try a little foot pressure massage and appreciate your feet! Imagine how many steps your feet take every day so thank them for their reliable service.
